I woke still feeling drained and achy, but shuffled downstairs to find the others.

I finally located them outside in the backyard. Samantha, Graham, and Keleş sat in lawn chairs, sipping sweet tea. It was cooler than yesterday but still warm enough to appreciate.

“Did anyone pour me one?” I asked.

“I’ll get it,” Graham said and winked. He poured me a fresh glass and handed it to me.

“We haven’t gotten you the sippy cup yet,” Samantha said. “So be careful. Please.”

I sneered at her and took a sip as I sat on the chair next to Graham. “Turns out I can still dream walk, so it looks like we are lucky in that respect.” My phone buzzed and I pulled it out of my pocket.

Parker: We can meet tonight. I’ll bring your book.

My phone buzzed again, and she sent a street address as well as a photo of the book. I took in a deep breath, and my shoulders relaxed at the sight of the leather-bound cover with the blue Phoenix. Thankfully it was not the wooden cover of the ancient Persian text. We wouldn’t have to translate. “She really has it. She found the English translation.” I showed Graham, and the others huddled around my phone.

“So we can trust her,” Samantha said, matter-of-factly, as if she’d known all along.

“No,” Graham said. “But she has the book. We’ll have to meet with her.”

“Julia shouldn’t go,” Keleş said. “What if it’s a trap? We have to assume it’s a trap.”

Graham swallowed hard. “I agree with Keleş. You’re too vulnerable. If she’s working with Aimes...”

I drew my hair back out of my face and frowned. “I’m the one making the decisions here; I will be going to meet her. But I’m not sure we can trust—”

Samantha’s body jolted. Her pupils dilated and her brow scrunched. “Oh.” She straightened up and reached behind her, slipping the dagger I’d given her out of her belt and handed it to Keleş.

“What?” he said as he took the blade from her.

Her body jerked, and she twisted out of the chair, collapsing on all fours. Her head tucked under her body, and then she stretched out, arching her back and sitting on her knees. “Trust!” She shouted. Only it was no longer Samantha’s voice. It was the monotone drone I now associated with Jack.

“Jack.” I sprang to my feet. “Leave her alone!”

Jack chuckled. “Oh, cousin. How can I? This friend of yours is even easier to possess than that chick in Minneapolis, Libby. This one is so open; it’s almost like an invitation.”

Samantha’s body bent backwards. “Suck A t-turd!” she shouted, momentarily taking her body back. Then lost control again.

“Speaking of trust,” Jack said through a vacant Samantha, “who’s this new girl you’ve been working with? And seriously, how the hell do you think you can trust her?”

“I’m not telling you who I’m working with,” I said.

“Oh, but Samantha is,” he said. “I can read this woman like a book. Who’s Parker?”

Crap. Was he reading her mind? I needed to keep a poker face.
